Allister Garrod
I was born in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1960, the youngest of four siblings. I remember, as a young boy, spending quite a bit of time catching newts. I'm not sure why, because these little reptiles always swiftly returned to their stream as soon my back was turned. I reckon they were "Homing Newts". My other main occupation was searching for my sister's pet tortoise, who was quite an escapologist.
Having failed the "Eleven Plus" in 1971, I was condemned to five years in a Secondary Modern School. Well, they were half right, it wasn't very modern. The next five years were largely unremarkable. A lesser mortal would have been broken - I, on the other hand, left school relatively unscathed by the experience, to embark upon a career as a "desk-pilot". This was against all the advice of my Careers Officer, who believed that all 16 year old girls should serve in a cake shop and all 16 year old boys should do something that requires overalls and copious amounts of sump oil.
In 1984, following a short spell living in the Middle East, I married Teresa (actually, her Dad promised me lots of money to take her off his hands), and we now have two teenage sons and a cat (the cat is my favourite - probably because he is the most intelligent). Cats are so much more independent than dogs, don't you think? I admire their feline single-mindedness and their ability to make their own decisions about life, instead of waiting to be told what to do next by their owners.
I like to relax by listening to music. I know that sounds fairly boring, but I do play one or two instruments myself as well. Some years ago I was Bandmaster of Lincoln District Scout Band but these days you are more likely to find me playing "early music". Getting to grips with the intricacies of period (reproduction) instruments is a very captivating hobby. I perform with The Lincoln Renaissance Band and The City of Lincoln Waites.
Awards
Alongside the day-job, I have been building websites since 2002. I learned a lot when I was working on my first website, and won over 400 awards in the process. The Awards were given for design, coding and content. That site was for the Lincoln District Scout Band. I believe that website design should be easy on the eye - to complement and enhance your content.
